Upstage and LG Electronics Build On-Device LLM in LG Gram Laptops

Upstage and LG Electronics signed a MoU to develop a small language model (SLM) to be deployed on LG Gram laptop series as an on-device LLM

Seoul, Feb. 6, 2024 – Upstage and LG Electronics have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deploy a large language model (LLM) on LG Gram laptops. This strategic partnership aims to execute generative AI directly on end devices, such as personal computers (PCs) or smartphones.

The integration will feature a small on-device LLM, also known as a small language model (SLM), built into the device itself. This edge-deployed generative AI offers increased responsiveness, more precise personalization, greater reliability, and enhanced privacy compared to cloud-based AIs.

This collaboration capitalizes on Upstage's technological prowess in the SLM arena. Solar, the company’s flagship pre-trained language model, boasts a compact yet high-performance design in various natural language processing (NLP) tasks, standing on par with industry titans. The 10.7B model made waves in the global AI stage last December, securing the top position across benchmark tests on the Hugging Face Open LLM Leaderboard and surpassing even larger models like Mixtral 8x7B.

Hong-joon Choi, Vice President of Upstage, said, "We expect that by developing and applying on-device AI technology with LG Electronics, we will provide faster, more convenient, and safer AI services. Starting with applying the highest performance AI to LG Gram laptop, which has sold a cumulative total of 2 million units, we will do our best to ensure that LG customers worldwide can experience AI functions in LG Electronics' premium home appliances, enhancing their convenience and satisfaction."

Gong Hyuk-jun, IT CX Manager of LG Electronics, said, "LG Gram has led the ultra-lightweight and premium laptop market through continuous innovation over the past 10 years. Based on our advanced technological competitiveness in the AI field, we will actively target the next-generation AI laptop market."

Looking ahead, South Korea’s leading AI startup and electronics giant plan to leverage this partnership to not only enhance the user experience in PC products but also expand AI functionalities to other home appliances. This includes novel experiences like recognizing voice commands, searching stored document contents, and summarizing video conference contents in text, acting as a personal AI assistant.
